The Yamazaki comes from Suntory’s Yamazaki distillery, Japan’s first malt whisky distillery, founded in 1923 near Kyoto. This expression carries no age statement and is matured across American, Spanish and Mizunara Japanese oak casks, sitting below the age stated Yamazaki 12 and 18 in the range. It’s built as an accessible way into Suntory’s flagship single malt, aimed at someone curious about Japanese whisky without committing to the pricier aged expressions. The Mizunara oak in particular gives it a character distinct from Scotch single malts, since that wood isn’t used in Scotland.
