Select was created in Venice in 1920 by brothers Mario and Vittorio Pilla, founders of the distillery Fratelli Pilla & C., who wanted to give something to a city rebuilding after the war. Now produced by Gruppo Montenegro to the original recipe, it’s built from 30 aromatic herbs and botanicals, most notably juniper berries, macerated and then distilled in copper pot stills, alongside individually processed rhubarb root for bitterness. It’s the traditional base of the authentic Venetian spritz.
CHARACTER
Orange Peel: opens the nose alongside rhubarb root
Juniper: a resinous lift that reasserts on the finish
Red Berries: strawberry and raspberry on the entry
Lavender: a floral quality running through the palate
TASTING NOTES
NOSE- Orange peel and rhubarb root open the nose, followed by bitter herbs and a lift of juniper resin.
PALATE- Lightly sweet with red berry tones, shifting to bitter orange citrus and rooty herbal depth, with a floral lavender-like quality.
FINISH- Medium length, gentle spice and lingering bitter herb character, juniper resin reasserting at the end.
