Campari has been made since 1860 and calls itself “the Italian Red Spirit,” its vivid colour and closely guarded recipe unchanged since Gaspare Campari first blended it. Master Blender Bruno Malavasi describes the recipe as “so beautifully balanced that upon removing even the last ingredient of the list, the whole liquid would fall apart,” a formula the brand still keeps secret today.
CHARACTER
Orange Peel: blood orange and orange zest lead across nose and palate
Grapefruit: ruby-red grapefruit zest cuts through the citrus
Cherry: a maraschino-cherry note on the palate
Black Pepper: a peppery tingle running through the spirit
Clove: emerges late, into the finish
TASTING NOTES
NOSE- Complex and citrus-led, blood orange peel and grapefruit zest over quinine, bay leaf and cherry.
PALATE- Herbaceous and bitter, blood orange and grapefruit balanced by cherry, pepper and a syrupy sweetness.
FINISH- Long and lingering, bitter orange and grapefruit fading into quinine and clove.
