GianChand is a single malt handcrafted by DeVANS in a distillery in the lap of the Himalayas in Jammu, made using six-row barley, its high-altitude character owing directly to the place it’s distilled. Whisky critic Jim Murray reviewed it for the Whisky Bible 2022, calling it “unquestionably the most delicate Indian malt I have nosed in the near 30 years” and “one of the most fascinating whiskies I came across this year.” It’s available in both unpeated and mildly peated styles, bottled at 42.8% ABV.
CHARACTER
Dried Fruit: dried apricots and prunes lead the nose
Honey: honeycomb toffee on the nose, honeycomb sweetness on the palate
Ginger: dried ginger on the palate
Chocolate: bitter chocolate on the finish
Vanilla: soft vanilla sweetness on the nose
TASTING NOTES
NOSE- Brandy snaps and gingerbread, dried apricots, prunes, vanilla and honeycomb toffee, with mild notes of peat and dry oak.
PALATE- A sweet, creamy start with delicate nutty honeycomb, a touch of salt and hints of dried ginger and fruits.
FINISH- Medium to long and dry, with hints of bitter chocolate and a zing of white pepper.
