The Glenlivet’s story starts with founder George Smith, who took out one of the first legal distilling licences in Scotland after the 1823 Excise Act, defying threats from the illicit distillers who saw it as a betrayal; the distillery has operated since 1824 and won the exclusive right to be called “The Glenlivet,” with the definite article, in 1884 after dozens of imitators tried to borrow the name. The 12 Year Old is first matured in traditional oak before spending further time in American oak casks, water drawn from the distillery’s own Josie’s Well feeding mashing and fermentation, and it remains the top-selling single malt in the United States today.
